Poetic Underground is passionate about building the poetry community in Kansas City, so we make it a goal to welcome poets from around the world to feature at Uptown Arts Bar during slams or open mics. This way, we can have a diverse group of voices and backgrounds to help educate and shed light on different walks of life.

Jeanette Powers curates the generative performance art venue, Uptown Arts Bar, and is the Acquisitions Editor for KC based, indie press EMP Books. She also co-directs the arts non-profit Chameleon Arts with legendary print-maker Hugh Merrill and is Treasurer/grant-writer for KC's annual small press fest. She is the author of six books of poetry, including her newest release "Don't Lose Your Head" through EMP in 2017. She is an alumni resident of Osage Arts Community and The Lemon Tree House and can most often be found riverside with her hound dog, Olly Mas.
Bill Moran is a third-year MFA poetry candidate at Louisiana State University and a former medic. He was the 2012 & 2013 Austin Poetry Slam Champion; has performed and taught poetry throughout the US, Australia, and Southeast Asia; and served as president of Mic Check, a non-profit poetry organization in Brazos County, Texas. His work has appeared or is forthcoming in Button Poetry (video), Phoebe, LUX, Alien Mouth, Pressure Gauge Press, Drunk in a Midnight Choir, and others. His debut collection "Oh God Get Out Get Out" is forthcoming with Write Bloody Publishing in Spring 2017. It is a collection of poems that walk through the haunted house of trauma & illness & loss, organize it, and return us to a self & world that is once again habitable. He appreciates your concern and well-wishes, but swears he is okay. Really.
Tom Leveille is a 29-year-old non binary spoken word artist hailing from Newport News, Virginia - born and raised. Leveille studied at Old Dominion University but did not throw a hat into the poetry scene until very recently.
A Richmond slam champion, a writers den slam champion, College Unions Poetry Slam Invitational 2015 Sacrificial Poet, in addition to this collection, published a chapbook through Impossible Wings Press entitled "the year no one said hallelujah.” Their work has been
featured in various places including altdaily.com, samueljay.co.uk, and the pulp zine.
Moody Black is a spoken-word and visual artist, actor, chess instructor, story teller, and photographer from Spartanburg, S.C. Moody Black is electrifying audiences across the country with his original poems and energetic performances. Fusing a blend of Hip-Hop, Soul, and Poetry, this talented artist delivers a unique rhythmic message in which each new listener finds common ground. Moody Black has been a performing artist since the age of twelve, and has become a prominent force on a multi-regional poetry scene through his enthusiastic live shows and strong work ethic.
